Exploring Figurative Abstraction: Workshops with Emily LaCour

Exploring Figurative Abstraction Workshop Series

The instructor for the following workshops is the fabulously talented Emily LaCour.
These workshops are great for individuals who draw from the model and are interested in developing a creative and more abstract approach to figurative art!

Figure/Ground; Dissolving and Determining Boundaries
In this workshop, we will determine, dissolve and define the boundaries between the mass of a figure and the space around it. We will work with a variety of materials and methods to tackle the delightfully puzzling concept of figure/ground relationships.
September 29th, 2018, 12:00 – 4:00pm
September 30th, 2018, 12:00 – 4:00pm
Cost: $235
The Figure As Architect; Building An Implied Space
In this workshop, the proportions, perspective, and placement of multiple figures in one composition will build the space of your drawing. We will draw the model in 5-7 different positions on one large surface, working at making a cohesive composition.
November 17th, 2018, 12:00 – 4:00pm
November 18th, 2018, 12:00 – 4:00pm
Cost: $235
The Ambiguous Gesture
In this workshop, participants will use past life drawings to create large scale drawings that contextualize the gesture of the figure(s). Participants will collage sketches to work out a gestural narrative drawing, before traveling the idea to a larger scale.
January 26th, 2019, 12:00 – 4:00pm
January 27th, 2019, 12:00 – 4:00pm
Cost: $235
Video Still Sequence
In this workshop, participants will become witnesses to their own physical gestures. Participant will use their phones or cameras to record a 3 minute video of themselves, then extract 3 stills from the video. The video stills inform us about the physical transition before and after the “action” of the primary image. Participants will take this source material to create one singular composition that transcribes the kinetic.
March 23rd, 2019, 12:00 – 4:00pm
March 24th, 2019, 12:00 – 4:00pm
