Explore the many ways form / volume is manifest in the visual arts. Consider the importance of form in the implied space of 2D images and the physical space of 3D works, and how from relates to our experience of our bodies and the natural world. Discover ways to think about form, to see form and various ways to construct form in your art work! Super important stuff for anyone making drawings, paintings or sculptures!

VISUAL VOCABULARY LECTURE SERIES

These lectures, given by Michael O’Keefe, will thoroughly explore various fundamental ideas of visual art. In each lecture, participants will view many examples of works of art that demonstrate a dynamic use of a particular art idea. Michael will discuss the nature of these concerns and how they are integrated into the compositions of the examples shown. Each topic will be considered as it relates to 2D and 3D art. The goal of these sessions is to help participants develop a more keen and complex understanding of essential art ideas. These lectures will entertain, surprise, inform and generally deeper your appreciation of the language of art.
*Not necessary to attend all; one will benefit from attending a few or even just one.

Form
October 25th, 2018, 6:00 – 8:00pm
Explore the many ways form is manifest in the visual arts. Consider the importance of form in the implied space of 2D images and the physical space of 3D works, and how from relates to our experience of our bodies and the natural world.
Line
November 29th, 2018, 6:00 – 8:00pm
Examine the basic and rich element of line. Consider the many ways in which line can be used to bring to life a work of art, and how line relates to our experience of movement and form.
Shape
January 31st, 2019, 6:00 – 8:00pm
Explore the inevitable world of shape. Consider how shape affects our ability to “read” works of art. Explore the many ways shape exists in the visual anatomy of the human psyche.
Texture
February 28th, 2019, 6:00 – 8:00pm
Examine the much overlooked idea of visual texture. Consider how visual texture relates to the act of seeing. Examine many ways artists have used texture to invigorate a work of art.
Color
March 28th, 2019, 6:00 – 8:00pm
Examine the many complex ways to think about color in relationship to the visual arts. Consider many examples of how color is used, so as to become more aware of the vast world of color in the arts.
