Announcing Elizabeth Schowachert’s Three-day Workshop: In the Flow – Ink, Tools, Brushes, Paper Friday, June 2nd, Saturday, June 3rd, and Sunday, June 4th, 2023 10:00 to 4:00 each day! The cost is $625.00 which includes many supplies (supply and registration info below) |
In this workshop Elizabeth will show a variety of materials, tools and techniques to apply in your expressive art making processes. In addition to the traditional brushes we use, each student has the option to build their own mark making tools and brushes for use in applying ink to paper.Develop your unique voice as a mark maker exploring both loose and gestural strokes and or controlled and orderly ones. These expressive mark making skills and the tools you’ll be using can become a part of your on-going practice whether you’re using paint on canvas, ink on paper or a scratched mark on plaster. The possibilities are endless. Many tools are provided as well! We will also discuss some of the cultural aspects of traditional Asian calligraphy: tools, materials and processes. As someone who has spent many years traveling and working in Asia, Elizabeth has tremendous respect for these traditions, the culture and the people. |
Workshop Schedule: Day One: We will work with ink and brushes, various mark-making tools to create a variety of works on paper. Artists will work with India and Brusho inks in combination. We will also explore the connections between materials (paper, ink, tools/brushes) and the artist (making centered, fluid marks – being centered and open). We will work to create ENSO (a circle that is hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create) and other mark making processes/ideas/concepts. Participants are optionally welcome to make their own tools. Some handles and feathers will be provided but those of you interested are encouraged to see the optional supply items listed, to build your own tools. Day Two: The first half of the day we will add in alcohol inks to the media palette. Using all materials available we will continue to create works on paper. For the second half of the day, we will take the body of work created and start to piece together (collage) finished works. Day Three: We will finalize finished work using the pieces created the previous days, or using work which is created that day (assuming there is sufficient time to dry). Elizabeth will demonstrate how to adhere paper to cradled panel using Talas Jade #403 PVC adhesive. There will be plenty of instruction as well as time to create. |

About Elizabeth Schowachertelizabethschowachertart.comArtist Statement: Connecting is to link or to be linked to; join; fasten. Our lives are made up in part by our connections. Without connections we would literally be alone, living a singular life – it would be akin to living in nothingness. Connections can be fleeting or painful to have or keep. They can also bring joy and happiness and contribute to a more fulfilled life. My intention with my art/paintings is to explore the most significant connections in my life, those that have influenced me and made the deepest impressions. Cultural connections have had a significant impact on my life, my way of thinking, the way I choose to live and my ideas about myself. My experiences in Asia especially have influenced my ideas about myself, who I am and how I live my life.In my current body of work, I am exploring the idea of cultural connection, how 2 cultures can co-exist, maintaining a distinct point of view, while at the same time coming together in a whole new way. A new voice that combines the traditional and the contemporary, in a way that honors and values both.Artist Bio: Elizabeth was born and raised in Northern California, and has always held a deep appreciation for and affinity with the sea and the natural beauty of the Northern California coastline. Her paintings reflect the deep bond she feels with nature and her love of the ocean. Organic shapes and forms are almost always present in Elizabeth’s work, whether she is working with encaustic medium or ink on paper. In recent years Elizabeth has been working primarily with encaustic medium/mixed media (paper, ink, and fabric). |
